Sarah Skrainka, trained at Marin Ballet from 1983-85
I danced at the school from 1983-85, when I had to stop due mostly to a problem with my hips. I boarded at Roberta Weiss’s house with Karin Ellis, Dawn Ruth, Christie Horine and, for a while, Jeri-Anne Phelps. I am currently finishing a PhD in French Literature at the University of Virginia.
Chris Di Biase, Graduated from Marin Ballet in 1996
I currently live in New York and dance all over the city and I am proud to say that the training at Marin Ballet is far superior to anything I have seen here. I don't mean to say that the dancers here are not good, cause God knows they are, but it's the little things that I was taught about technique and artistry that I don't see being taught by anyone here...Perhaps there just isn't the time, I don't know -- at any rate, I am very proud of my early training.
Lydia (Polhemus) Hance, Graduated from Marin Ballet in 2003
I graduated in 2003 and my time at Marin Ballet was wonderful and crucial to my training and artistic development. After graduation, I went to SMU and graduated magna cum laude in Dance Performance and English Literature. Upon graduation I moved to Houston and began dancing with a contemporary company called Ad Deum Dance Company. I've been performing all over the country. I just got married in December and am temporarily living in VA until my husband finishes law school in May. Currently I am Artist in Residence at a school here, and am working on new choreography that will be performed across the US. I am also working with and guest performing with Roanoke Ballet Theater. This summer, we are moving back to Houston where I'll rejoin Ad Deum. We'll be on tour this summer across the South and then to Beijing to perform in the Olympic games' festivities. I'm excited for what the future holds!
I think of Marin Ballet often, and specifically the teachers who impacted my dancing and life as an artist so much. I am so proud of the school and my reverence for the special development and education that happens at MB only grows with time. Hope all is well there, and I look forward to reading about Marin Ballet today and tomorrow.
Jennie Scholick, Graduated from Marin Ballet 2005
I danced at Marin Ballet from 1990 to 2005 and look back fondly on the training, discipline, and love I received there. I am currently a senior at Princeton University where I will receive a degree in Comparative Literature, with minors in Dance and European Cultural Studies. I have continued to dance intensively following my graduation from high school and have performed in New York City, Philadelphia, and Princeton, NJ in the last six months. Wishing to stay involved in dance both intellectually and physically, I am interning at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for the summer and hoping to pursue a career in arts administration or arts law when I graduate in 2009. I am incredibly grateful for the excellent training of
Marin Ballet and the amazing friendships forged there.
